More emails between Gale and Alex

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the information...or lack thereof...about the distance between the brothers.  It will remain a mystery I guess.
My grandparents lived in a Jewish "old age home" In NYC from the time they were about 60.  It was on 2nd Ave. and 12th street as I recall.  Neither one of them spoke English so even though my mother took us to see them weekly we could never really communicate.  Grandpa Feller seemed to be a kind person and by all accounts he was.  He was very religious, I guess you would say orthodox.  It was a great honor to be buried with Jewish bibles which he was.  Grandma supposedly was more matter of fact and perhaps not as religious as he was.  I don't remember feeling any warm fuzzies with either one but I didn't expect to and had no reaction of disappointment.
Celia's son Virgil learned Yiddish at home and so could talk to them when he came to town from Santa Monica.  Grandma really liked that and chastised me for not doing the same....in Yiddish.  Actually, I could understand my parents when they spoke Yiddish and they sent me to a Yiddish speaking camp one summer so I learned quickly because I had to.
So who is in your family tree coming down from David, my great uncle?Would you like to share some of your pictures?

Gale,
I forgot to reply to your question about contact between David and Isidore.
I do not know why or if David and Isidore did not talk to each other.
Or perhaps it was the children who did not keep in touch with their first cousins.
I really do not know.
I can only tell you that contact with my own first and second Feller cousins is difficult.
Requests for pictures and information has been difficult and I only have contact info for very few descendants of David Feller.
I just dont think they got along.  I know my father had very little connection with much of the Feller cousins.

In other families, I have heard that differences in religious Jewish beliefs have split up families.  Not sure that is the case here.

Best Regards,

Alex

emails between Gale and Alex

Alex, When Celia was 19 she hitchhiked across the country for which she was very proud.  She was also proud that her parents trusted her enough to consent.  Perhaps the photo was taken then.
Virg, What do you think Virg?  Any chance you could send Alex that bio you wrote about Celia?

Gale,
On the picture of Celia Feller, it is stamped with the photographers name in the city of San Francisco.
Does that make sense.  Was Celia living or visiting SF?

I finally found the 1930 Census for Isidore Feller and family on ancestry.com
It was filed under Teller.  It is attached to this email.

Attached is the only other document I have of Isidore Feller that I have not sent or you may not have.
This is his Death Certificate.

Another document worth getting would be his naturalization papers.
Not sure if you have these or not.
My best guess would be that they are at the Bronx County Clerk which a request would have to be mailed in.
Do you have his naturalization?
With this document, we could find his ship manifest which I am having trouble locating.

Slobodianski Genealogy

I also f0und this site with a family tree of the slobodiansky family. I don't know if or how it is connected, but there were some people with a connection to Khmelnik. Probably related somehow!

Gravestone Inscription

I was curious about the hebrew inscription on their gravestones, so I did some research. I have figured out what it means! If you notice the two letters at the top- "pay" and "nun", which stands for Po Nikbar, which means "here lies". Then, the five letters (the last line of hebrew) at the bottom- it's an abbreviation from the bible, 1 Samuel 29:25 "May his soul be bound up in the bonds of Eternal Life". The 2nd line says "The important woman, Leah daughter of the honorable Naftali". The 3rd line, 1st word, I think is an abbreviation for "died". 2nd word stands for the number 18 (day of month). 3rd word, Heshvan (month). 4th word, each letter stands for a number- 400-300-20-4 which equals 724. This stands for the year 5724, the "5000" is typically omitted. So, the date of her death (on the jewish calendar) is 18 Heshvan 5724.
Ozer's Gravestone: His begins with "here lies". An important and honest man. Ozer son of Moshe Wolf. Died 2 Heshvan 5714. His also has the 5 letters that stands for "May his sould be bound up in the bonds of Eternal Life".
I also read that it is common to have a star of david on a man's gravestone and a candle or candlabra on a woman's gravestone.

Here is the website that I found this info, if you want to read more of the details. I also used

this to type out the hebrew words. And this to translate it.
alex has left a new comment on your post "From Alex":

I happened on this site during a google search for Slobodiansky. On occasion I will get diverted with my research. I found a ship manifest for a Berko Slobodiansky from Khmelnik and whose father was Naftali. So I assume he was a brother to Lena. I tried to find more info on him and then just googled the name as it is not common. Lo and behold, this website was listed in my search. I have been hoping for a while to connect with this side of the family. There must be different privileges for posting between contributers and commenters (like myself). I will email some pix.

more from Gale

I don't think that was too clear either....
Start at the page with the web address I mentioned.
When you are on that page look to the top right corner, next to your email address and you will see a phrase "new post".
Hit that and an empty page appears which you then type upon and hit send at the bottom...just like sending an email. Try it.

Hello Feller family,
I am posting this by going to "NEW POST" at the top right corner of the opening page of the blog. When you are at the correct place, the address reads www.feller genealogy.blogspot.com.

I hope this helps as we are missing each others communications. Hi again Alex. My first post is on the page with the Ships Manifest.
